Ride on toys give toddlers their very first taste of freedom! Watch as they whiz about, speeding past pets and pulling up for snacks at the drive-through (aka your kitchen). However, with so many different styles to choose from, it can be tricky deciding on which one will suit your mini Michael Schumacher best. But we’ve got you!
How To Choose A Ride On Toy
We have put together our top recommendations on what to look out for when choosing a kids ride on car, toddler trike or scooter.
Age
Munchkins from as young as 12 months old can motor about on a Diditrike. Our toddler trike has no pedals, so it helps to boost kids’ physical development as they learn how to balance on the seat and use their little legs to steady themselves and push forward. Choose from four animal-inspired designs - Giraffe, Zebra, Crocodile and Ladybird.
Bigger kids aged 3+ can upgrade to four wheels with our battery-free Didicar. Steer left and right, or flip the wheel to go backwards. Our ride on toy car comes in eight different colours, so your little Lewis Hamilton can pick their favourite, and it can be used both indoors and outdoors.
When it comes to kids scooters, the Didiscoot is great for all ages (depending on ability). The three wheels help keep you stable, giving youngsters the confidence to zoom about and practise their balance and mobility as a result. Plus, the adjustable handle height means it can grow as your child grows, or be shared with older or younger siblings.
Longevity
It’s likely that your tot’s new ride on toy will see a few knocks and scrapes during its lifetime, so it’s a (wheely) good idea to get one that’s sturdy and durable. Despite being super lightweight and easy to carry around, Didicar toys feature a robust design that can support a weight of up to 120kg (so grown-ups can have a go, too!).
Still, we know accidents can happen. That’s why we have a UK-based service team to help get your Didicar ride back on the road, or you can shop our spares for simple home repairs.
Movement
Keeping things simple gives children the courage to try new things, and all of our ride on toys are really easy to manoeuvre. They’re 100% kid-powered, so they are free of batteries, motors, pedals and greasy chains. They can be used on most surfaces, but work best on smooth, flat surfaces like concrete, tarmac or hard flooring.
Toy Safety
Bumps and scrapes are all part of growing up, and it’s important that we create a safe space for children to take risks - that’s how they learn and gain independence. But you’ve got to have total trust that the toys in their playroom are of the highest quality and conform to the strict European Safety Standards.
Toy safety is our top priority, and all original Didicar products have been stringently tested to the latest EN71 requirements and UKCA marking. But watch out for fake Didicar imitations when shopping online. You can find out if a Didicar is authentic here.
Size
Your toddler’s feet should be able to touch the ground as they ride, as they’ll need to push themselves along without difficulty. But there’s another thing to consider when it comes to size, and that’s space! Some kids ride on toys take up a lot of room, but Didicar products are designed to be small and compact for easy storage. The Didiscoot is particularly nifty as it folds up to half its size when not in use.
